The conflict between Covington and Poirier began at the time when Poirier compared to Khabib Nurmagomedov. Covington posted an alleged video of Poirier for an amateur martial artist during the practice before the match against Khabib.
Then Poirier vowed that whenever Covington was in his eyes, he would look good at Covington. The couple many times later had words back and forth.
“People asked me a lot of things like why chose Dustin? I answered because Dustin was heavier than me. We used to weigh many times at American Top Team. I don't want to lose weight because I am the best in the weight class that I play.” – Covington told James Lynch of Fanatics View.
“Dustin once told the media that whenever Covington was in his eyes, he would treat Covington beautifully. But I was in his sight of 40, 50 times something. – Covington added.
Although Poirier was planned to fight Charles Oliveira, Lightweight, after defeating Conor McGregor at UFC 264, Covington believes that the match between himself and Poirier is much more meaningful. They used to be friends but the relationship had poured plays and now Colby wanted to resolve the conflict inside the octagon cage.
“We have had 10 years of practice together and he had a word back and forth with me in the gym, I also had words back and forth with him. We have profound personal conflicts, I want these conflicts to be resolved in the octagon cage. But if he doesn't dare to fight, he should best call me a young father.” – Covington closed.
