Sharing on the sidelines of the Paris Olympic Games, Boris Van Der Vorst, President of World Boxing once affirmed that this sport will continue to appear at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. To realize that, World Boxing will expand the scale, and receive more new members in the future.
True to the statement of the World Boxing president, right after the Paris Olympic Games closed, they received 5 more members. More notably, three of them are in Asia, which is considered the “stronghold” of the International Boxing Association (IBA), the separatist World Boxing unit.
The 5 new members of the World Boxing are Taipei China, Pakistan, Bhutan, Fiji and Ecuador. They helped the World Boxing bring the total number of members attending this organization to 42.
Pakistan and Taipei China are members who have held the position of IBA chairman for many years. It was the time when IBA received many criticisms for the violation in the arbitration work in the tournament, especially the Olympic. However, the two presidents are still in the position because they are simultaneously assumed as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Of the two presidents, former President of China Taipei Wu Ching Kuo was accused of fraud and corruption by IBA himself. Taipei China also has an IBA fighter accused of being a male but competing for women's boxing at the Paris Olympic Games. It was Lin Yu Ting, who then won the gold medal.
From 2017 to the present, the position of IBA chairman has been transferred to Uzbekistan and Russia leaders. They are not IOC's commissioner, and it is also the time when IBA started to accept fraud. As a result, IOC deprives the right to organize Boxing Olympic level of IBA and established World Boxing to manage and supervise.
Meanwhile, on Fiji, Chairman of the National Boxing Federation is an arbitrator who regularly performs international duties. But recently, at the Young Asian Boxing Championship 2023, he was suspended on duty because of serious mistakes. The Organizing Committee was then the Asian Boxing Federation (ASBC), which was closely related to IBA.
