What is Triangle Choke?

Triangle Choke is one of the simplest and most effective locking techniques. The reason for this can confirm this is because Triangle Choke has many ways to do it, making it difficult for the opponent to defend. Many highly qualified Jiu Jitsu boxers even build their tactics around this blow.

Like many techniques in BJJ, Triangle Choke originates from Judo. In Judo, this was called “Sankaku-jime”. When Jiu Jitsu martial arts martial arts were developed in the first period of martial arts, they recognized the effectiveness of this technique. Therefore, similar to many other techniques, they have changed a few factors before applying to the curriculum.

Although many boxers can perform Triangle Choke, not everyone knows the science behind this technique. The first thing you need to know is that Triangle Choke is a “blood lock” blow. It means it puts pressure on the carotid arteries in your neck, preventing blood flow to the brain. You need two legs around the opponent's neck with an arm clip between them. Your upper leg puts pressure on one side of the opponent, while you push their arms to the other side. Then, use your own arm to strangle the opponent.

The shape that you hug your feet around the neck of the opponent is somewhat like a triangle. That is why the blow is called “Triangle Choke”.

In terms of tactics, Triangle Choke is a very effective counterattack used from the bottom position, often applied from the Open Guard location.
