Khabib Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA, 13-0 UFC) has announced that he decided to hang gloves after defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 October 2020, because he promised his mother that he would not continue the radio after his father died in mid-2020.
Since then, for months, UFC President Dana White has always tried to persuade Khabib to return to the stage. However, this afternoon, he officially wrote on Twitter farewell Khabib.
“Finally 29-0. He officially hung gloves, 100%. What you did was amazing, Khabib, thank you for everything and wish you happy with the new journey in the future, my friend.”
Written on Instagram, Khabib Nurmagomedov thanked UFC and said he had a conversation “between two real enemy men” with Dana White.
Thus, Khabib Nurmagomedov has officially retired from the Lightweight championship with a perfect record of 29-0, including 13 matches at UFC. His victories against Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, Rafael Dos Anjos, Eddson Barboza, Al Iaquinta, … will be the matches that the audience remembers forever.
With Khabib abandoning the championship belt, UFC will let the Michael Chandler vs Charles Oliveira match a pair of belt struggle. Chandler and Oliveira will lead UFC 262 on May 15.
