Born in Palembang, South Sumatra, Chinese -American actor Joe Taslim is a former athlete who practiced many different martial arts such as Wushu, Taekwondo, Judo and Pencak Silat.
His sports career reached its peak in the 1990s and 2000s when he won the Gold Medal in some Judo championships, but he unfortunately had to retire because of an injury in 2009.
