With the victory over Drew Dober in early March, Islam Makhachev quickly became a bright name in Lightweight. He is currently ranked 11th in the rankings.
Now, this Russian boxer is targeting two former UFC champions, Rafael Dos Anjos and Justin Gaethje to find the way to squeeze the top 10. Slowly and certainly, Islam Makhachev believes that he will soon “connect” you practiced Khabib Nurmagomedov to become the new Lightweight.
“I do not know how UFC will arrange, the boxers in the top 10 are quite busy compared to each other. But I am sure 90 percent that I will be playing with someone in the top 10,” Makhachev said.
Initially, Islam Makhachev was arranged to play with Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC 254. Unfortunately Dos Anjos was infected with Covid-19 before the competition. This pair was moved to UFC Fight Night 182, this time it was Makhachev's turn to retreat because of staphylococcus infections.
Coming to UFC 259, Dos Anjos did not accept the gloves with Makhachev, causing this Russian puncher to meet Drew Dober – a martial artist who was not too high in the rankings.
Makhachev once loudly challenged Tony Ferguson right after the victory at UFC 259. Unfortunately, Ferguson is busy preparing for the match against Beneil Deriush, which takes place next month.
“I think I will fight Dos Anjos.” Makhachev said. “And of course it is likely to be Justin Gaethje. I and Justin know each other but not close friends. He is also free, why not fight with each other a match?”
