Chandler had just defeated before Charles Oliveira at UFC 262. The former Bellator champion had the opportunity to win the UFC championship only in the second match at the tournament. Chandler seemed to be able to do it after the first impressive half, many times made 'due to Bronx' miserable.
Everything quickly happened in a negative direction with Chandler when he hit Oliveira's left arm at the beginning of the second half. The Brazilian puncher bought the blow to get a Knockout and won the belt spectacularly.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, White was asked about the next step for Chandler.
“It was a good question,” White answered. “I mean, there are a few opportunities. He can fight Gaethje, we will see. We still have not done anything but that makes sense and that will be an interesting battle. Imagine Chandler and Gaethje.”
Gaethje's latest defeat also took place in a belt match. The former Lightweight Interim champion tried to unify the weight in the competition with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254 in October 2020.
If Gaethje defeated Chandler, he would once again have the opportunity to compete. However, the biggest possibility of Oliveira's next opponent will be the winner of Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor III at UFC 264 on July 10.
