The former World Championship of Ukraine, Lomachenko (14-2, 10 KOS), has previously sent a challenge to Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia, but now he will face the former light champion Nakatani (January 19, 13 KOS) in Las Vegas on Sunday morning on June 26 (Vietnam).
The owner of the two Olympic gold medals is rebuilding his career after the horrific defeat against American emerging opponent Teofimo Lopez Jr in 2020 and is preparing to return to the ring.
When asked why Nakatani was chosen to be his opponent, Lomachenko shared in an interview: “It is the fact that I have inspired me to participate in this match is the fact that I have just lost all the championship belts.
“I have to start over and want to confront a top candidate. I don't want a glove with a 'road -lining' boxer.
“This guy (Nakatani) brought Teofimo Lopez a very difficult battle and I prepared his challenge carefully.”
Lomachenko, who won the empty light WBC belt in the decisive match with Luke Campbell in August 2019, confirmed that he did not despise his experienced opponent.
Nakatani, 32, Japanese, only fought twice for the past three years but has defeated fighter Felix Verdejo in December.
“He is strong, very high and his arm is very long,” Lomachenko added. “He has the highest level of experience, as he has shown in the battle with Lopez and the way he can beat Felix Verdojo.
“This is the perfect challenge for me.
“I am always aiming to face the highest level of competition.”
